The Simpson Darksome is a Flip-Front helmet with unique Simpson helmet style. It’s fair to say that many ‘modular’ helmets have a rather staid design. Aimed at tourers and commuters, old-school flip-up helmets generally use more conservative vents, middle-of-the-road shell shapes and restrained overall looks.
But Simpson Helmets is changing all that, with the new Darksome. It incorporates design DNA from the legendary Simpson Bandit – with the same radical chinbar shape, grille-type vents and NASCAR-style shell shape – in a slick, flip-front design.
The Bandit became a firm favourite amongst UK bikers in the 1970s, 80s and 90s, with its super high performance and sharp aggressive looks. Now, fans of the Bandit can enjoy the same uncompromising design – in a practical, usable day-to-day flip-front helmet, with quieter, more advanced aerodynamics.
Simpson has given the Darksome a full suite of top-end features, based around an advanced Maxx -3C composite main shell, with a high-tech polymer flip-up section. That makes for a very light helmet – just 1,510g, as well as an easy-to-use flip mechanism.
A central button releases the chinbar, and a sliding switch on the main shell lets riders lock the chinbar in the ‘up’ position. There’s an internal drop down sun visor, a Pinlock Maxvision insert included in the box, and the main visor has a tool-free release system. Fastening is by double-‘D’ ring strap, and the liner is fully removable and washable.
Simpson has also released an even lighter full carbon version of the Darksome, with super-slick carbon fibre outer shell material and black vents.
The Darksome costs just £349.99 in graphic styles or £499.99 in full carbon, in sizes XS-XXL.

However the inner sun visor tends to smack my nose every time I lower it, and has resulted in me no longer using the sun visor.
I wouldn't say I have a large snout, although it isn't exactly small either. I asked my girlfriend to try it out, and she also ended up cracking the bridge of her sniffer with it.
Could maybe do with a slight modification, to stop the sun visor from dropping so low.
Arrived within 2 days and my first thoughts are production quality seems very good. Put the lid on and it fits like a glove and feels very comfortable. I'm usually a large but do hover between Medium and Large with Shoei & Shark. I took other reviewers advice and ordered the smaller size medium . Putting the helmet on and first thoughts are it feels very light and compact on the head, It does not feel large like some helmets do. The chin bar and visor are easy to operate and click into place without needing any force. I've not yet worn on the bike and will do another review once I have about wind noise and vision. Was also very impressed with the price of the additional Iridium visor which was only 30 quid extra when bought with the helmet. when you consider Shoei will charge you 55.00 for smoked and 85 quid for iridium buying this helmet for an every day use helmet was a no brainer. Having owned 2 Shark Flip from Modulars I'd definitely advise buying one of these instead.
